The organizers of three Taylor Swift concerts scheduled for this week in Vienna canceled the events after receiving confirmation from the government regarding a terrorist attack plan at the Ernst Happel Stadium.

Barracuda Music, the organizer of the artist's performances, announced the cancellation in an Instagram post on Wednesday night, citing the "confirmation" of a threat of an attack at the stadium in the capital of Austria where the concerts were to be held.

"We have no choice but to cancel the three scheduled shows for everyone's safety," the post states.

Taylor Swift was scheduled to perform at the Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday as part of her Eras Tour.

The announcement of the cancellation came after Austrian authorities arrested two alleged extremists, one of whom seemed to be planning an attack at an event in the Vienna area, such as the concerts of Swift, the most listened-to artist of 2023 on Spotify.

The main suspect, 19 years old, was arrested in Ternitz, south of Vienna, while the second individual was detained in the Austrian capital.

Franz Ruf, director of public safety at the Austrian Ministry of the Interior, reported that authorities were aware of "preparatory actions" for a possible attack and that the 19-year-old perpetrator had shown interest in Taylor Swift concerts.

Ruf also mentioned that the young man had sworn allegiance to the Islamic State group and that chemical substances had been seized from him that are currently being evaluated.

The cancellation occurred hours after the announcement of an increase in security measures for concerts, including a special focus on entry checks.

The police chief of Vienna, Gerhard Pürstl, commented that although the concrete danger had decreased, the abstract risk justified the increased security.

Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer expressed his disappointment on social media platform X over the cancellation of the concerts, but emphasized the importance of cooperation among the police and Austrian and foreign intelligence services to identify and address the threat in time, thereby preventing a tragedy.

Barracuda Music reported that all tickets will be automatically refunded within the next 10 business days. The stadium had been completely sold out for the concerts, with an estimated 170,000 attendees.

Taylor Swift's fans expressed their sadness on social media for missing one of the superstar's shows. Annmarie Timmins, a journalist who traveled from the U.S. for Thursday's performance, shared her shock upon learning about the cancellation while waiting for the subway.

The incident recalls the 2017 attack at Ariana Grande's concert in Manchester, England, where a suicide bomber killed 22 people.

The official investigation revealed the lack of timely action by MI5 – the British intelligence agency – to prevent the attack, one of the deadliest in the UK in recent years.
