Amid rampant inflation and the public transportation crisis on the island, the Cuban regime announced that starting on August 15, the cost of electric tricycle services in the capital will increase to 10.00 CUP per passenger.
This decision, announced by the General Directorate of Transport of Havana (DGTH), marks a significant increase from the initial price of 4.00 CUP that was established when the service started in 2020.
The new price aims to align the rate in Havana with that of other provinces in the country, where the rate was already 10.00 CUP, according to a note published in the official newspaper Granma.
According to the DGTH, the current cost in Havana does not cover the operating expenses of the service, which has made its maintenance unsustainable.
Authorities say that this adjustment –more than double the initial rate– is necessary to cover the costs associated with the repair, maintenance, and leasing of the tricycles, as well as to comply with the taxes established for self-employed workers who operate these vehicles.
Since its implementation in 2020, the electric tricycle service has grown to include 118 units in Havana, operating on 15 routes across eight municipalities: Boyeros, Playa, Marianao, Centro Habana, Habana Vieja, Cerro, Plaza, and Guanabacoa.
In other provinces, they also support the transportation of passengers amid the serious fuel crisis in the country.
At the beginning of the year, the regime raised the prices of some means of transportation on the island, a very unpopular measure that caused great discontent among the population.
