A 29-year-old Cuban mother claimed that she would like to leave Cuba because "this country is not progressing."
He said it in an interview given to Martí Noticias, who shared a short clip of the conversation on their social media.
"I can't see my daughters without food," expressed the mother of two girls and a resident of Havana, arguing about a problem that is increasingly growing in Cuban society, such as food insecurity.
According to the VII Report on the State of Social Rights in Cuba 2024, presented by the Cuban Observatory of Human Rights (OCDH) less than a month ago, "89% of Cuban families suffer from extreme poverty," which is one percentage point more than last year and 13% more than in 2022.
One of the most revealing pieces of information is that “seven out of ten Cubans have stopped having breakfast, lunch, or dinner due to lack of money or food shortages.”
They add that "only 15% of Cubans have been able to have three meals without interruption," a tangible reality in the serious inflationary crisis that the island is experiencing.
These numbers translate into extreme decisions that Cuban mothers have had to make to feed their children, in a context of abundant scarcity.
Last February, a Cuban mother turned to social media to sell three appliances that she kept as "the only valuable things" in her house, in order to buy food for her sick daughter.
"I need to urgently sell these three things together. That's the only valuable stuff left in my house, and I'm selling it so I can buy food for my daughters. I have nothing to feed them," said Yéssica Peña.
Peña is one of the mothers who stood in front of the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) in November 2023 to demand greater attention and quality of life for her children, patients with severe conditions. Her daughter, Amelia de las Mercedes Téllez Peña, needs an esophagus transplant and other resources so that she can eat.
Another young Cuban mother attempted suicide last March due to the inability to feed her child with special needs.
Evelin Pineda, 29 years old, took a high dose of psychotropic medication because she had no food to give to the minor, who has cerebral palsy and other serious conditions, she confessed to Radio Martí.
