The Cuban professor Pedro Albert Sánchez, a prisoner of conscience recognized by Amnesty International, refused to wear the uniform of common prisoners in prison 1580, located in San Miguel del Padrón, as an act of protest against his arbitrary detention.

In a phone call whose audio was shared by the station Martí Noticias, Sánchez informed his family of his decision not to shave, not to wear the uniform, and not to undergo inspections.

"My cycle of obedience here in prison is over. I am already dressed in civilian clothes, and all this mess is over," declared the opposition leader during the call.

He stated that he is "kidnapped by State Security here, I am not a prisoner, I have no reason to be in that uniform."

Pedro Albert Sánchez, 67 years old and a prostate cancer patient, has been at the center of a legal and human rights battle since his arrest for participating in the July 2021 protests, for which he spent several months in prison.

In December 2023, he was returned to prison after a court revoked his "limited freedom" sanction.

In June, his son reported that the island's regime is allowing his father to die by denying him access to medical care and medicines at the 1580 correctional facility in Havana.

Professor Pedro Albert is serving a five-year sentence for his participation in the protests of July 11, 2021.
