Filmmaker Lilo Vilaplana shared on social media that his film "Plantadas" is attracting more and more viewers in Cuba, despite the censorship it faces for paying tribute to political prisoners who have fallen victim to Castroism.
"From Cuba, I'm receiving images of how people are watching the movie 'Plantadas' even in a park," Vilaplana noted on Facebook.
The filmmaker emphasized that the film is "slowly spreading throughout Cuba" and noted that it is available on the streaming platform VIX.
From Cuba, the film can be accessed using a Virtual Private Network service, known as a VPN.
Last May, activist Yamila Maceo announced on Facebook: “‘Plantadas’ is now on VIX. My people in Cuba, download a VPN and I’ll send you the link to the movie.”
The film, by filmmaker Lilo Vilaplana, follows three women who fight to restore and stabilize democracy in Cuba, until the leader of their revolution betrays them, as reported by the Vix platform.
The streaming platform emphasizes that they "must survive in a prison where their rights are violated, without respect for their status as women," reflecting the ongoing situation in Cuban prisons.
"Planted," filmed in 2022, features performances by Alina Robert, Claudia Toma, Rachel Vallori, Yuliet Cruz, Ariel Texidó, Daniel Romero, Luis Manuel Álvarez, Lily Rentería, Larisa Vega, Amarilys Núñez, Juanita Baró, Vivian Ruiz, and Frank Egusquiza.
The screenplay is by Ángel Santiesteban, Ninoska Pérez, and Vilaplana himself, who co-directs alongside his son Camilo.
In 2021, Vilaplana released the film "Plantados," dedicated to honoring the memory of all the political prisoners who spent years in jail in Cuba for standing up to the dictatorship.
The audiovisual piece tells the horror of political prisoners who never bowed to the regime's attempts to treat them as common inmates and insisted, even at the cost of their lives, on being recognized as prisoners of conscience.
