A 57-year-old Cuban identified as Rafael Alfredo Montejo Luna has been found guilty of second-degree murder for the death of his wife, Aleyda García, which occurred in April 2021 in the city of Clewiston, Hendry County, Florida.

After committing the femicide, the Cuban fled to Cuba, from where he was extradited to the United States in December of the same year he committed the crime.

The tragic event occurred on April 24, 2021, when the victim's son, worried about being unable to contact his mother, asked for help from the Hendry County Sheriff's Office.

The agents arrived at Aleyda's residence in Montura Ranch Estates, in Clewiston, and upon arrival found her lifeless on the floor of her bedroom. Investigations revealed that she had been suffocated, and the scene showed clear signs of violence.

At the time of the crime, Aleyda García and Rafael Montejo Luna were going through a turbulent divorce process, and there were already records of conflict between the couple that had required police intervention on several occasions.

Montejo Luna was considered of interest for the investigation from the beginning, but especially after authorities discovered crucial evidence at the crime scene.

Among the evidence that incriminated him, they found his DNA under the victim's nails, as well as the discovery of his mobile phone at the murder scene.

Additionally, license plate readers had captured images of his car circulating near the residence during the time frame when the murder occurred.

Despite being summoned by the authorities several times, Montejo Luna never appeared before the police and ultimately fled to Cuba.

The arrest warrant against him was issued for the first time on November 3, 2021, after the Cuban failed to meet with the police after having agreed to do so.

However, U.S. authorities issued an international arrest warrant and succeeded in having him extradited from Cuba in December 2021.

The man was arrested by U.S. Customs on December 16, 2021. The accused was handed over to the Hendry County Sheriff's Office on January 10, 2022, where he remained in jail with a bail of 500 thousand dollars.

A jury has now found him guilty of the crime. The final sentence will be handed down on September 10, when the judge is expected to determine the prison sentence he will have to serve.
