A puppy was tied to a utility pole and abandoned in the blazing sun in Guanabacoa, Havana, until a woman rescued him on Tuesday after finding him dehydrated and nearly choked with a nylon rope.
A person named Naiviv D'Sifonte reported on Facebook that they discovered the animal early in the morning near the Yuri Gómez dental clinic.
The person who rescued the animal asked several neighbors, but no one knew to whom the dog belonged, and it had been under the scorching sun for at least five hours.
Finally, D'Sifonte decided to take him home, but first a neighbor gave him water, which the dog drank eagerly.
He now has it in his home while he waits for the owner to show up and provide photos to prove it's his pet.
"Maybe it escaped from home, and someone tied it up there so it wouldn't walk away and get run over. I want to believe that’s how it happened,” expressed the hopeful person who rescued the animal.
Reports of abandoned dogs left to fend for themselves are becoming increasingly common on social media. In the best-case scenario, they find compassionate individuals who provide them with food and shelter.
In July, an internet user reported that a dog was abandoned at a bus stop in Havana, where it was left tied to a fence with a collar and its name written on a piece of cardboard. The animal was rescued and is now looking for someone to adopt it.
"This little dog was abandoned on Saturday morning with his collar, his name, and everything. They tied him up at the stop we marked in green," explained Raisa Pérez Villaverde in the Facebook group "SOS Callejeros Cuba."
