A young Cuban was detained recently in the province of Villa Clara, accused of an alleged illegal departure from the country.

The activist Félix Llerena made the complaint on social media where he demands the release of Walter Jesús Rodríguez, a young man with whom he has shared ties since childhood.

"I have known Walter Jesús Rodríguez since childhood, his brother has been my friend since childhood," Llerena wrote on his Facebook profile.

He also pointed out that the young man was "kidnapped by the State Security G2 in Santa Clara accused of an alleged illegal exit. Walter is not a criminal! And he shouldn't be there. I hold the Cuban regime responsible for whatever may happen to Walter."

The detention of Rodríguez took place on a beach, where, apparently, the young man was with other people, swimming, according to an audio accessed by CiberCuba.

“They took him prisoner from the beach... They had no evidence that they were on an illegal outing, there was no boat in the middle, nor a small boat,” they say in the audio.

This is not an isolated case, and although Llerena's complaint seeks to make it visible, Cubans who are detained for this reason struggle greatly to defend their cases.

In 2023, the young man from Havana, Luis Yoilán Puebla Polanco, was sentenced to 10 years in prison after a failed attempt to illegally leave the country from Villa Clara in a corrupt trial, his mother stated.

A few days ago, it was reported that a tip-off led to several arrests near Juan Francisco beach in Camajuaní, Villa Clara.

The events occurred when a group of neighbors from the town, mostly young men but also women and children, were preparing to leave Cuba illegally, but they were intercepted by the police and arrested.

According to a resident of the area who explained to CiberCuba, there is talk in the town that someone heard the group members planning the illegal departure through a house’s yard and alerted the National Revolutionary Police (PNR), which aborted the operation.
