Three years without arresting those who strangled the young Cuban who went fishing alone.

Maykel Sablón Bisec was 27 years old, he was the father of a boy and did not get to meet his daughter, who was born after he was murdered. Three investigators from the DTI have handled the case without resolving it. The first retired, the second fell ill, and the third, José Manuel, from the Saravia unit, in El Cerro, doesn't seem to have read it.

In the San Agustín neighborhood of La Lisa (Havana), "there are people who know who killed Maykel Sablón Bisec (Havana, December 4, 1994)." Logically, they do not want to say it out of fear of reprisals. There have been "hints," but "no one wants to talk. They are afraid."

The young man went fishing alone just three years ago, and he was found strangled and decomposing in a river he used to visit with "the neighborhood boys" every two or three weeks. The fishing rods never appeared. "The only thing that showed up was the fishing line with which they strangled him. He had it tangled around his neck and in one hand."

However, those responsible for the Technical Research Department (DTI) in Saravia, in Cerro (Havana), have not identified the perpetrators of the crime all this time. The case has passed from hand to hand without anyone managing to solve it. The first officer retired, the second fell ill, and the third, a "young boy named José Manuel, who is the boss," doesn't seem to have read it. Since there have been no arrests, there has also been no trial.

The two young children of the victim received financial assistance from the State after their father's murder, "which was not even enough for milk." Six months later, it was taken away from them. Sablón Bisec never got to know his daughter. When he died, he was the father of a 4-year-old boy, and his wife was a few months pregnant.

The day he was killed, September 12, 2021, Sablón Bisec did nothing out of the ordinary, except for going fishing alone, something that was not typical for him. In fact, he usually went with "the guys from the neighborhood" at night and returned home the next day around nine or ten in the morning. "That day he went alone." When he did not arrive at his usual time, the family became alarmed and filed a report with the police. They started looking for him on their own because the police did not take action on the disappearance until after 72 hours. He had been strangled with fishing line and then thrown into the river. He was found four days later, already decomposed. He was 27 years old," says a person close to the deceased.

Sablón Bisec was taken out of the river, taken to Forensic Medicine, then to the morgue, and from there buried. "There was no wake," laments the same source, criticizing the indifference of the DTI in this case. "In real life, they don't want to work," he says, referring to the fact that they have not contrasted or taken into account the elements provided by the family.

For example, the comment made to them in the neighborhood, stating that "the ones who killed him are here." That’s how the family learned that it was not just one murderer, but three, and although they provided this information to the DTI, those in charge of the investigation never acted on it; they kept it in a drawer, and there it remains, sleeping the eternal sleep.

On the second day of his disappearance, Maykel Sablón Bisec was searched for in the area of Jaimanitas, about three or four kilometers from where the murder occurred. Those searching for him showed photos to a neighbor, who said he hadn't seen him, but commented that around nine o'clock the previous night, a time that coincides, according to Forensic Medicine, with "the time of death (21:00 - 22:00 hours)" of Sablón Bisec, three young men passed by, and one of them, "a little dark-skinned," approached and asked him how to get to San Agustín, saying they were from 25. They asked about the same neighborhood where Maikel lived.

The family reported it to the Police, but the investigators didn't even flinch or bother to go ask and show photos to the boy so he could identify the one who approached the entrance of his house asking how to get to San Agustín. They have done nothing. They don't want to work," the same sources insist.

As of today, the reasons why those alleged three murderers killed Sablón Bisec are unknown. "That's what is not known. There are data, there is information that around five in the afternoon he was seen walking with someone." The young man's surroundings do not believe that this person was a friend but rather a "companion." That individual assured the police that he left Maykel fishing in the place where he was allegedly killed later, and that he went home.

"The police detain him, interrogate him, he admits that they were together, but there is no evidence," adds from the young man's surroundings, who to this day does not know who it is about.

Despite the DTI's lack of interest, the young man's family has approached Citizen Attention to file a complaint, but they have not been able to get the investigation moving. Three years later, justice has not been served, and this impunity is what, according to the think tank Cuba Siglo XXI, is behind the significant increase in violence on the Island.

According to the Cuban Observatory of Citizen Audit (OCAC), between January and June 2024, a total of 432 crimes were recorded on the Island, representing a daily average of 2.37 crimes, marking a 152% increase compared to the same period in 2023 (1.82 daily crimes in 2023). The analysis shows a "worrying increase" in violent crimes in the first half of this year, highlighting a growth of 111% in murders, 290% in assaults, and 208% in thefts in the first half of 2024.
