The Cuban singer-songwriter Amaury Gutiérrez, detained this Tuesday at the airport in Cartagena, Colombia, after having a disagreement with an immigration officer who ended up denying him entry to the country, spoke with journalist Enrique Santos to explain what happened.
From the immigration office where he has been detained for several hours along with his manager, Yasir Pérez, Gutiérrez clarified that he is not one to create scandals and that, although there was a discussion, there were no verbal or physical assaults towards the immigration officer involved.
"I'm not an artist who seeks attention; I'm all about the music. This is the first time this has happened to me, the first time since I started my recording career in '97. Even back then, I traveled with my Cuban passport, which was a nightmare," she said, reiterating that she had never had any problems before.
He explained that -for a reason he said he did not know- they wanted to prevent his manager from entering the country, something that upset Amaury.
"I intervened in the conversation 'a little elevated,' but there was no physical or verbal aggression either," insisted the musician, who described the involved agent as "communist," something he claims upset the recipient.
"I told them 'you are treating us as if you were communists' and then they became furious and told me that I was also not going to enter the country," Amaury recounted, adding that they were separated from the other passengers and that they were deliberately delayed so that they could not be returned to Miami on the same plane and had to wait until the flight this Wednesday.
"I'm very sorry because it's been a long time since I came to sing here," he said in reference to his Colombian followers, a country where he hasn't performed since before the pandemic.
In the final part of his talk with Enrique Santos -during which Amaury was always heard with many connection problems- the Cuban singer reiterated that the reaction of the Colombian immigration authorities was "disproportionate."
"People know that I am not an artist who creates scandals, I always focus on the music. I have my ideals, my political stance is very clear, but I never disrespect anyone," he concluded.
It all started with a brief and enigmatic post on Facebook that said: "Impossible to enter communist Colombia. Bye family."
Soon after, Amaury Gutiérrez clarified in a second post on his social media that he was detained at the airport in Cartagena after having problems with an Immigration officer.
In a third post, titled "statement," he announced the cancellation of his tour across the South American nation, which was set to take place in five cities in Colombia between September 6 and 14.
Until the closure of this note, there are no other details about the incident.
