The Government of Havana collects immense garbage reported by activist in social media contest.

"Well, it served some purpose. They picked it up this morning," said the internet user who participated in the contest to report the huge trash heap that was in a park in Luyanó.

The government of Havana collected the waste that had been piling up in a massive dump located in the Luyanó neighborhood, following a report made in the form of a contest by an activist on social media.

The event, called "Show Your Block," was organized spontaneously at the end of August by the user identified on Facebook as Edmundo Dantés Junior, who urged citizens to post photos of the garbage dumps that have become part of the everyday landscape of their communities.

The images shared by Cuban internet users showed the harsh reality in localities across the country. From Cayo Hueso in Havana to Guantánamo, residents uploaded photos of piles of waste that blocked sidewalks, invaded streets, and created an unhealthy environment for those living in these areas.

Apparently, the unusual contest called through social media caught the attention of the Havana authorities, as deduced by one of the participants, who sent the activist images of the cleanup they carried out in the dump she reported.

“They collected the trash from one of the largest trash heaps from the contest we did. Before and after photo,” said Edmundo Dantés Junior this Tuesday, sharing the images of the place sent to him by a user identified as Rosie Kev. “Well, it was of some use. They picked it up this morning,” the internet user expressed.

The enormous dump that was reported was located in the Fábrica park, at the corner of Justicia, in Luyanó. The image shared by Rosie Kev showed the accumulation of garbage and waste that turned the corner in an "L" shape.

In the park, there is a play area for children, and street sales of food products are often organized, which is why the accumulation of garbage and waste that threatened the health of the environment was even more concerning and outrageous.

The peculiar contest reflected not only the Cuban ingenuity to face adversities but also the serious health situation affecting multiple communities.

As CiberCuba detected in the comments to the post, participants hoped that visibility on social media would pressure authorities to take urgent measures to resolve a problem that jeopardizes public health and the quality of life on the Island.

Judging by the cleanliness of the Fábrica park in Luyanó, the authorities in Havana have taken note of the public outcry and have taken action to address it.

However, in recent days, the lack of resources and care in the workplace in Cuba were exposed in a video that highlighted the conditions of the workers from Comunales de La Habana, who were collecting garbage without gloves, appropriate tools, or other protections.
