As every September 8th, thousands of Cubans paid tribute to the Virgin of Charity of Copper, revered as the Patroness of Cuba in the Catholic Church.
People from various provinces of Cuba and other countries gathered in the town of El Cobre, in Santiago de Cuba, to participate in the procession dedicated to the devotion of the Virgin Mary.
The news portal CubaNet shared a video on Facebook this Sunday showing the massive gathering that walked through the streets of El Cobre behind the image of the Virgin of Charity.
Declared Patroness of Cuba on May 10, 1916, by Pope Benedict XV, the holy image inspires a great festival every year.
The Archdiocese of Santiago de Cuba shared on Facebook different moments of the traditional pilgrimage that takes place every September 7th from the main city to El Cobre.
"After a joyful and heartfelt pilgrimage, the young people who departed from Santiago de Cuba towards the Sanctuary of the Mother, as an expression of faith, placed in her all their longings and personal wishes that they carried in their hearts with great devotion," the publication indicated.
"We trust that this journey, this pilgrimage, will continue to resonate in the history of our nation and our faith," added the Archdiocese of Santiago de Cuba in its statement.
Rescuer Aris Arias Batalla, representative of the Red Cross in the eastern province, shared on Facebook different moments from the pilgrimage held on the eve of the Day of the Virgin of Charity of El Cobre.
However, the program of activities to celebrate the Virgin of Charity has been evident in Santiago de Cuba for several days, with a conga that accompanied the parishioners to the sanctuary in El Cobre.
The festive conga accompanied the pilgrims from the central park of the village to the Sanctuary, merging traditional Cuban music with religious devotion.
However, the jubilee dedicated to the Patroness of Cuba extends beyond the borders of the city of Santiago de Cuba.
Dozens of Cubans joined this Saturday the procession of the Virgin of Charity of El Cobre, which traveled through the streets of El Vedado, in the Havana municipality of Plaza de la Revolución.
The route, which began at the Parish of San Juan de Letrán - on 19th Street and J - extended to the Church of the Sacred Heart, on Línea and D.
In August, Cuban residents in the city of Miami participated in a procession of the Virgen de la Ermita de la Caridad through various points in the county.
