A young man dies after jumping from a building in Old Havana.

The young woman jumped from the second floor of the building located at 412 Villegas Street, between Teniente Rey and Muralla, as confirmed to Cubanet by a witness at the scene.


At only 22 years old and under the care of her family due to mental health issues, a young Cuban woman died this Friday after taking her own life at her home in Old Havana.

According to the portal Cubanet, the young woman jumped from the second floor of the building located at Villegas Street, No. 412, between Teniente Rey and Muralla, as confirmed by a witness at the scene.

So far, no further details about this tragic event have been revealed, although the cited media outlet published a brief video on the social network X.

Just a few days ago, a 14-year-old Cuban boy died after jumping off a bridge over the Yayabo River in the city of Sancti Spíritus.

The opposition member Librado Linares reported on X that the teenager jumped from the pedestrian bridge that connects the Jesús María neighborhood with Colón, in that city in central Cuba.

In August, the protester from La Güinera and political prisoner of 11J, Yosandri Mulet Almarales, died as a result of the severe injuries sustained during a suicide attempt that left him teetering between life and death for days.

This was confirmed by the Cuban Prison Documentation Center (CDPC), a non-governmental organization that reported on August 22 the second and final suicide attempt of the political prisoner, which occurred during a pass from the penitentiary where he was doing forced labor.

Cubanet reported that in 2021, on average, four people lost their lives daily on the island due to self-inflicted injuries.

In addition, he added that between 2014 and 2020, nearly 9,000 people committed suicide in the country, according to the statistical health yearbooks.

The suicide rate on the island has been high over the last century, with more than 10 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, although this figure is significantly lower compared to the levels observed during the economic crisis of the Special Period in the 1990s.

He also added that in 2019, Cuba was the fourth country in the region with the highest number of suicides.
