The Cuban naturalized Portuguese Pedro Pablo Pichardo claimed the top prize this weekend in the men's triple jump category of the Diamond League athletics, while his fellow countryman Lázaro Martínez finished in fifth place.

Runner-up in Paris 2024, Pichardo claimed the crown for the third time in his successful career, although now with a result far below his usual performance, recording 17.33 meters in Brussels, Belgium.

The king under the five rings of Tokyo 2020 outperformed German Max Heb (17.20) and Burkinabé Hugues Zango (17.05), who took silver and bronze, respectively.

Meanwhile, Martínez (16.23), representative of the Cuban Federation of the discipline, was far from his best results and finished in second to last place in the final contested by six jumpers.

According to JIT, the athlete born in Guantánamo did not reach the 17.34 meters that is his main achievement this season, not to mention that he committed three fouls. In short, a competition to forget.

Nevertheless, the largest of the Antilles celebrated on Friday Leyanis Pérez's victory in the women's triple jump, thanks to her 14.37 meters on her second attempt, enough to seize the coveted gem.

The Jamaicans Shanieka Ricketts and Ackelia Smith, with 14.22 and 14.11 meters, respectively, followed the 22-year-old Cuban, who placed fifth in the Olympic event on French soil.
