Cuba and Russia's foreign ministers sign a "treaty on the concession of real estate."

The signing of the agreement took place in New York.

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla and his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, signed a "convention on the granting of real estate" on Wednesday, according to a brief report in a video posted on the X account of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MINREX).

The signing of the agreement took place in New York City, in the context of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

In a brief note summarizing Bruno Rodríguez's day in New York, MINREX clarified that the meeting with the Russian Foreign Minister was "favorable for the signing of the Agreement on the granting of real estate in the city of Moscow, to locate the Embassy of the Republic of Cuba in the Russian Federation."

The Chancellery did not provide further details about the agreement, nor about the implications of said agreement.

"It is always pleasant and productive to meet with my esteemed friend Serguéi Lavrov, the Foreign Minister of Russia. We reviewed the excellent state of multifaceted bilateral relations and joint cooperation projects. I expressed my gratitude for the support and solidarity of the Russian government and people with Cuba," wrote Bruno Rodríguez on the mentioned social network, who did not make a direct reference to the signing of the agreement.

At first, the announcement of the signing of an agreement regarding "granting of real estate" raised alarms among some internet users who remember that, in May of last year, during the visit of the Russian politician and businessman Boris Titov to Havana, the Cuban regime offered land in usufruct to Russian companies to exploit it for a period of 30 years.

Titov, whom the Cuban-Russian Business Committee pointed out at that time, stated that both nations had taken decisive steps towards deeper cooperation in strategic sectors. However, no new updates have emerged so far regarding the progress of that offer, which worried the Cubans.

It is a reality that in recent years the ties between the governments of Miguel Díaz-Canel and Vladimir Putin have intensified in all areas.

In one of the most controversial collaboration episodes, in June of this year, a flotilla of the Russian Navy, including a nuclear submarine, arrived in Havana, where it remained for five days.

As of the close of this note, there are no other details regarding the "granting of real estate in the city of Moscow" to locate the Cuban embassy in Russia. In any case, the term used by MINREX to inform about the agreement suggests that they will not pay for the property.
