The Havana Bay Tunnel –in the Cabaña-Havana direction– was reopened on the morning of this Saturday after being closed due to a water accumulation that blocked vehicle passage.
The obstruction of the drainage ducts in the tunnel, caused by the strong swells that left heavy waves in the Cuban capital, was the reason for the temporary closure, reported the General Directorate of Transport of Havana on Facebook.
The company assures that with the rapid intervention of the local authorities, supported by specialized brigades and resources, they were able to evacuate the accumulated water and restore normalcy on this important route in the city.
The entity stated that actions to delve into the causes of the problem continue, with the aim of preventing future incidents of this kind in the Bay Tunnel, which has experienced serious deterioration issues in recent years.
The incident on Friday occurred despite maintenance work carried out last May, and that the tunnel has been repeatedly closed for repairs in recent months.
Social media users questioned the effectiveness of maintenance work and noted that these closures have become usual whenever there is heavy rain, which affects the thousands of vehicles that travel through the tunnel daily.
The Bay Tunnel, one of the key infrastructures of the Cuban capital, has undergone multiple interventions over its more than 65 years, including a major repair in 2001 by the French company that built it.
