Nicolle Valls talks about the family legacy of the Versailles restaurant in Miami. Discover what the secret to the success of her Cuban sandwich is.

Nicolle Valls, granddaughter of Felipe Valls, founder of the famous Versailles Restaurant in Miami, shared what the secret is behind the establishment's Cuban sandwiches.

In an interview with Fox News Digital, Nicolle spoke about her family memories and the experiences she had growing up in the iconic Cuban-American establishment, inaugurated in 1971 and still providing services today.

"It was great to grow up in the restaurant industry and be part of Versailles," Nicolle commented. She also highlighted the role the restaurant plays within the Cuban-American community and the city of Miami, in general.

For Cuban Americans, Versailles is not just a restaurant to eat or have a snack, but a recurring destination to celebrate events related to the history of their homeland and their host country.

Recipe for the Cuban sandwich from Restaurant Versailles

One of the most iconic dishes of Versailles is the Cuban sandwich, described by Nicolle as a "comfort food" that has endured over time thanks to family recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation.

"They are recipes from people who worked in the kitchen when we started and that have been passed down over all these decades to what it is today," he stated.

The ingredients for the recipe of the famous Cuban sandwich from the Versailles restaurant, to be shared between two to four people, are:

  • 1 Cuban bread, 2 feet (60 cm)
  • 12 oz. of sweet ham
  • 7 oz. of lean roasted pork
  • 7 oz. of Swiss cheese
  • mustard
  • pickled cucumbers
  • butter.

In the preparation, the first step is to heat a large skillet over medium-high heat or use a sandwich press at a temperature of 300 degrees Celsius.

  • Cut the bread horizontally. On one half of the bread, spread mustard and place the pork, ham, Swiss cheese, and pickles on the other half.
  • Join both halves of the bread, cut it.Cuban sandwichin the desired portions and spread butter on the outer top part.
  • Place the sandwiches in the preheated skillet or in the sandwich press.
  • Heat for 2 or 3 minutes. If using a frying pan, flip them so they brown evenly. Wait until the sandwich is hot and the cheese is melted.

The secret of the Cuban sandwich at Restaurante Versailles, according to Valls, lies in the Cuban bread that they make themselves and in the perfect combination of flavors that make this dish a classic in Cuban cuisine in the United States.
