At least six migrants died on Tuesday after the Mexican Army opened fire on a truck transporting undocumented individuals of various nationalities, including Cuban.

The Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) explained that the tragedy occurred when soldiers fired upon a truck transporting 33 migrants from Cuba, Peru, Egypt, Nepal, India, and Pakistan.

The incident took place on the same day Claudia Sheinbaum assumed the presidency of Mexico. It was around 8:50 pm on Tuesday, on the stretch of the Villa Comaltitlán-Huixtla highway, in Chiapas, about 50 miles from the border with Guatemala.

The Mexican Army was conducting ground reconnaissance when "they detected a pickup truck traveling at high speed," says the statement.

Upon noticing the presence of the Army, the vehicle attempted to flee, while two other pick-up trucks "like those used by criminal groups in that region" followed behind, the note adds.

According to reports from the local police, the military pursued the convoy for several miles, and one of the vehicles reportedly went off the road in an attempt to evade them.

The military claimed that they fired after hearing explosions coming from one of the vehicles they were pursuing, which were moving at high speed.

Information is still unknown about some fatalities from the incident, where four people died at the scene, another 12 were taken to a hospital where two more died, and the remaining 17 were handed over to immigration authorities.

Among the four migrants who lost their lives at the site of the attack, there are minors.

The death of a Peruvian citizen has been confirmed, according to the country’s foreign ministry.

Mexican media also clarified that the other two fatalities were of Egyptian nationality.

They were two women, Selvia Saad Salah Medel, 18 years old, and Neima Navil Farag Zakher, 42 years old, who passed away due to the severity of their injuries at the general hospital of Huixtla, where the 12 injured immigrants were taken.

Selvia Saad Salah Melek was going to celebrate her birthday next week. Her 14-year-old brother is in critical condition in the hospital, and their parents were also injured.

The identities of the other three deceased individuals have not yet been revealed.

The rest of the passengers, 17 in total, were taken into custody by the National Migration Institute for being in an irregular situation.

The Sedena reported that two military personnel have been removed from their duties and that the General Prosecutor's Office of the Republic and the General Military Justice Prosecutor's Office are in charge of investigating the events to determine the corresponding responsibilities.

After the attack, several international organizations, such as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and the United Nations Office for Human Rights (UN-OHCHR), have called on Mexican authorities to create legal pathways for migrants and prevent tragedies like this from happening again.

So far, neither the Mexican embassy nor the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Minrex) of Cuba have issued official statements regarding the incident.
