The Florida Department of Health issued an urgent warning this Tuesday about the danger of exposure to the flesh-eating bacteria Vibrio in the flood waters caused by Hurricane Milton.

This bacteria, commonly found in warm coastal waters, can cause serious infections if it comes into contact with open wounds, reported the digital page of NBC Miami.

After intense rains and flooding, like those expected with the powerful storm Milton, the concentration of Vibrio bacteria may increase, raising the risk of illness, especially in people with weakened immune systems, liver diseases, or cuts on the skin.

The infection caused by Vibrio vulnificus, one of the most dangerous, can be fatal if not treated quickly.

Due to this, the entity provided some recommendations to avoid infections:

-Avoid contact with floodwaters, especially if you have cuts or open wounds.

-Wash the affected area well with water and soap if your skin comes into contact with contaminated water.

-Do not consume food or beverages contaminated with floodwater.

-Boil or disinfect the water before consuming it if you are not sure it is safe. -Boiling it for at least one minute is the most effective method for eliminating bacteria, viruses, and parasites.

Additionally, the authorities also reminded that one should not drive in flooded areas, as most storm-related deaths are caused by drowning.
