The pound of sugar in Cuba, a country historically known for its sugar production, is now sold for 500 pesos due to the shortage of this basic product reaching unprecedented levels.
The price of a pound of sugar has skyrocketed to 500 CUP, denounced the Cuban actress and activist Kiriam Gutiérrez, who stated that she will not pay these amounts because "I don’t feel like it."
He said he has been searching unsuccessfully for sugar, whether white or brown, at a reasonable price for days; and the micro, small, and medium enterprises (Mipymes) near his residence sell a kilogram of sugar for 950 CUP, an exorbitant amount for most budgets.
However, the situation escalated when someone offered her sugar for 500 CUP per pound. "No, I don't feel like it."
The idea that Cuba, a nation that was a sugar powerhouse, is now experiencing a supply crisis of its emblematic product is inconceivable to many. "I feel worse when I think about the mills, the sugar villages, and the sugarcane fields," Gutiérrez commented.
In his outburst, he expressed that apparently Cubans on the island are part of a "social experiment in which the resilience of the Cuban people is being tested."
"They take from us, they take from us, they take from us, and here we are, surviving," he said, pointing out that the crisis has been the cause of the migratory exodus the country has been experiencing for the past three years.
The actress concluded that she will "have to experience forgetting sugar, after all, I think it is harmful. In this experiment we are living, the owners of the farm say that they take care of us."
The sugar crisis did not start now but several years ago and worsened in the last year, after Cuba experienced the worst sugar harvests in the last 100 years.
In February, a mother asked how she could sweeten her children's milk.
