"If there is someone who has truly made a difference, it is him," said El Taiger about Willy Chirino in an interview he gave to Enrique Santos, which the presenter has remembered on his social media after his passing.
In the video, El Taiger recounted how shocking it was for him to see Chirino at one of his concerts, while expressing his respect and pride for what he represented for the exile community and for many who had come to the United States.
"Willy Chirino is the face of Cubans outside of Cuba. That is one of the blessings and the ashé that our land has," he expressed deeply moved.
In the interview, El Taiger recalled the time Chirino attended one of his concerts and how his presence left him speechless. He confessed that seeing him was so emotional that he couldn’t remember the lyrics to “Ya vienen llegando” until he hugged him and “the lyrics came to me.”
"Willy has welcomed all of us, this whole movement of Cubans that arrived, he has shared with all of us, even with everything that is said about us because he, this I understand, he knows that maybe some of us are not doing the right thing, or maybe some of us are not acting correctly, but we are in the right place to do the right thing and to go and do the right thing, and he knows it and somehow, he is passing the baton to you so that you can continue his work so that what he did does not just remain in a song," he said in his words that now, after his passing, take on special meaning and highlight that aspect of the urban artist as a good friend and colleague that many have emphasized in recent days.
This emotional memory has moved thousands of his followers, who continue to mourn the loss of the reggaeton artist. “It hurts as if I had known him my entire life,” commented a fan. Another highlighted: “How incredible the admiration he had for Willy Chirino. Rest in peace, Taiger.”
Willy Chirino, for his part, also reacted to the video, sharing it on his social media and deeply lamenting his departure.
"In some way, without sharing it with him, he understood very clearly what my behavior has been with the Cuban artists from the other shore that I've encountered along the way since the 80s... Yesterday we lost El Taiger, and I feel great pain at his passing because I know that behind that facade of a rebellious man who did not follow the patterns required by the laws, there was a man with a good heart, a friend to his friends who was very much loved and who knew exactly how to reach the public with his songs," Chirino added.
El Taiger passed away on October 10, after a week fighting for his life at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, following a gunshot to the head that left him in critical condition.
His sudden departure at just 37 years old has shocked artists, colleagues, friends, loved ones, and his large legion of fans around the world.
The investigation to clarify the events is still ongoing, while the police are searching for key clues. Damián Valdez-Galloso, a person of interest in the case, remains at large, and the police have offered a reward of $5,000 to anyone who provides information about his whereabouts. The Cuban community, as well as public figures like Ana María Polo and Osmani García, are calling for justice to be served.
