Iberia flight IB6621, which was covering the route between Madrid and Havana, had to be diverted back to its point of origin due to a technical failure, allegedly in the engine.
The incident occurred when the Airbus A330-202, registration EC-MOU, had been in the air for about one hour and forty minutes, reaching an altitude of 28,000 feet and a speed of 444 knots.
According to messages from a passenger, the flight, on which his brother was traveling, landed safely in Madrid after the diversion.
The pilot kept the travelers informed of all decisions throughout the flight. The crew remained seated. The return trip was smooth with some turbulence but within the normal range.
Preliminary reports indicate that the technical problem with the plane was in the engine. Firefighters were present at the landing to prevent any incidents.
The website FlightRadar24 confirmed the return of the plane shortly after it flew over the coast of Portugal. The passengers are already on the ground with no reports of injuries.
In July 2024, an Iberia flight covering the route between Madrid and Havana had to be diverted to Miami due to heavy rains over José Martí airport, which made a safe landing impossible.
A month later, in August 2024, an Iberia flight from Madrid to Miami experienced a serious incident shortly after takeoff. Fifteen minutes into the flight, passengers smelled burning and smoke in the cabin, which forced an emergency return to Madrid airport.
