Derek Rosa, the Cuban-American teenager who stabbed his mother to death in Hialeah last year, turned 14 years old last month in an adult prison.
This weekend marked one year since the crime committed by Rosa against her mother, Irina García, whom she stabbed in the neck while she was sleeping.
The teenager had previously searched for the best way to kill someone and whether a knife could cut through a bone. He researched it and then applied it against his mother, who had only given birth to his sister 14 days before.
"I went to her room and I killed her," Derek said during a confession to Detective Joseph Elosegui, to whom he explained that he got out of bed and grabbed a kitchen knife with a purple handle.
After murdering her, he sent a selfie to a friend before calling 911 to confess the crime on October 12, 2023, the police said.
At several points during the call, the operator was heard asking the minor why he killed his mother. This went unanswered.
The prosecutor filed a first-degree murder charge in an adult court. Correctional officials arrested him on October 26 at the Metrowest Detention Center. His formal arraignment was held on October 31 in an adult court.
His defense attorneys have requested that the adolescent be returned to a juvenile detention center, but a circuit judge from Miami-Dade County, Richard Hersch, decided that Derek must remain under the custody of the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation of the county until his trial.
On July 15, a court hearing was canceled, with no reason for the postponement disclosed. However, county court records show that Derek has a status hearing on December 31, Local 10 reported.
