Amid the electrical emergency shaking Cuba since last Friday, the hotel group Gaviota, belonging to the Business Administration Group S.A. (GAESA) under the control of the Cuban regime's leadership, held a major tourism event in Holguín with great fanfare.
In the presence of the Minister of Tourism, Juan Carlos García Granda, and the president of the Gaviota Tourism Group, Carlos M. Latuff Carmenate, 'Destinos Gaviota 2024' was inaugurated on Thursday, the sixth edition of the Tourism Fair organized by the hotel group managed by the armed forces of the Cuban regime.
"The VI Tourist Fair 'Gaviota Destinations 2024' has begun, the most anticipated event by all, this time from the eastern province of Holguín! Today we start an exciting adventure where the passion for nature travel and discovery come together. We are ready to connect with travelers, professionals, and adventure lovers. Everyone is welcome, thank you for being part of this unique experience," announced the hotel group on their social media.
In the words of García Granda, "Gaviota intends to show participants the beauties of the destination and the tourist area that is beginning to develop in Ramón de Antilla."
“Today we launched something more special, the new Hotel Playa Luxury in Cayo Guillermo. This will be a benchmark in the Caribbean. I am sure that when you cross the doors of any Playa Luxury hotel, you will feel that you have arrived at a place where luxury and the Cuban soul meet,” said Latuff Carmenate in a speech delivered at the event.
The VI Tourist Exchange 'Destinos Gaviota 2024', which will run until Monday, October 21, brings together tour operators, travel agents, airlines, foreign press, and other guests amid the most severe crisis in the history of the national electroenergetic system (SEN), which has been completely collapsed since Friday.
According to the San Cristóbal Travel Agency, the event "is the second most important for tourism in Cuba, as it brings together professionals from the sector, specialized press, a selection of the best retail sellers from tour operators, as well as executives from hotel chains that work together with the Group."
With the country practically paralyzed, lacking transportation, with most workers at home, students not attending classes, and Cubans surviving through hellish blackouts, the Cuban regime spared no resources to celebrate 'Destinos Gaviota 2024' and showcase to the guests the new hotel facilities built in Ramón de Antilla.
While the ruler Miguel Díaz-Canel evades his responsibility and blames the U.S. embargo for the collapse of the SEN, which has deteriorated due to a lack of investments, GAESA – the company that controls more than 70% of the dollarized economy of the country without any oversight – continues its reckless race for investments in the tourism sector.
It doesn't matter that the statistics show the decline of this sector since 2020, with fewer travelers and hotel occupancy than ever. Since then, the leadership of the Cuban regime continues to invest money and resources of unknown origin in building hotels and infrastructure for tourism.
In 2021, Commander Ramiro Valdés revealed that Cuba needed 250 million dollars annually to maintain its energy matrix.
That same year, the regime allocated 4.138 billion dollars in real estate assets, some of them luxury facilities built in Havana, Varadero, and Holguín, a province where, in October 2021, GAESA proceeded with the eviction of families in the coastal town of Ramón de Antilla, that enclave that ceased to belong to the Cubans to pass into the hands of the mafia families of the dictatorship.
