Cuban welcomes her brother in Uruguay: "Welcome to freedom"

Viral reunion in Uruguay: Cubans thank for the "shelter of freedom."

A Cuban woman has moved social media with a video in which she receives her brother in Uruguay, seemingly at a bus station. Although there are no words in the video, the images say it all: hugs, smiles, and the Uruguayan flag draping over the shoulders of the newcomer, a symbolic gesture that many users highlighted as "a shelter in freedom." With the song "Creeré - Música Para Dios" playing in the background, the reunion was emotional for thousands of people, generating over 14.6K likes and hundreds of comments on TikTok.

Users quickly reacted with words of encouragement and gratitude. “You made me cry. I remembered the day I welcomed my brother. We truly have a lot to thank Uruguay for,” commented an emotional user. Another person added, “Welcome brother, this country will give you what you need to be free and prosper.”

The creator of the video, @lazaracfgos, also received praise for the gesture of covering her brother with the Uruguayan flag. “The flag over his shoulders is a symbol of freedom. Welcome to our country,” commented another person. Uruguayans and Cubans shared the same emotion, thanking Uruguay for opening its doors to those seeking new opportunities. “Uruguay, a small country but with a giant heart. Welcome everyone,” wrote a user with pride.

However, there was also room for reflection. “And to think that some celebrate the Cuban revolution while we give refuge to those fleeing from it,” expressed a user, amid a debate in the comments about politics and freedom.

The warm reception from the Uruguayans towards the Cubans reflects a close and supportive relationship between the two nations. For many, these kinds of stories are a sign of hope and the possibility of a new beginning. As one user summarized, "There is always room here for anyone who wants to be free. Welcome!"

After the avalanche of good wishes, congratulations, and kind reactions that the Cuban received on social media, she uploaded a follow-up video expressing her gratitude.
