More than 9,000 Cubans arrived in the United States in September 2024, according to data released by Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
The exact figure (9,315) left the mentioned month with the lowest number of entries in the recently concluded fiscal year (FY 2024), which began in October 2023 and ended this September. For example, in August, 11,742 entries were recorded.
Globally, 217,615 Cubans were inspected by CBP and entered U.S. soil in FY 2024. This is the second highest figure since 2021, just surpassed by the record of 224,607 in fiscal year 2022.
Compared to 2023 (200,287 asylum applications), this last fiscal year also saw an increase in the migration flow of Cubans to the U.S.
Similarly, the recorded behavior was similar to the previous period: the first quarter (October, November, and December) had a high volume, which declined over the following months.
The chart prepared by CBP shows that the aforementioned trend was downward. From the peak reached in December, the curve shows a gradual decline until September.
The data shows that the crisis in Cuba continues to provoke a massive and irregular exodus from the island to the United States, despite the efforts of President Joe Biden's administration to organize migration through legal channels such as humanitarian parole.
To the 217,615 Cubans who were intercepted at the borders during the current fiscal year, we would need to add those who arrived in the United States thanks to the parole implemented by Biden.
It is estimated that since the start of the program for the island in January 2023 and until July 2024, about 110,000 Cubans were examined and authorized to travel.
