President Javier Milei decided to dismiss Foreign Minister Diana Mondino this Wednesday following Argentina's vote in favor of lifting the United States embargo on Cuba at the UN General Assembly.

Argentina joined the 187 countries that supported the non-binding resolution opposing the sanctions imposed by Washington on the Cuban regime led by Miguel Díaz-Canel, reported the news portal Infobae.

The resolution states that the embargo severely limits Cuba's access to essential resources such as food, medicine, and energy.

Argentina's stance was part of an almost unanimous support for the island, in contrast to the votes against from the United States and Israel, as well as Moldova's abstention.

What is notable is that the only two votes against came from Argentina's main allies since Javier Milei took power, Infobae reported.

Manuel Adorni, presidential spokesperson and head of national government communication, announced via the social media platform X that the President's team at the Casa Rosada has appointed Gerardo Werthein as the new Minister of Foreign Affairs, replacing Mondino.

In 2023, President Milei stated that he would not appoint ambassadors to Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua, reaffirming the international relations that his government will uphold.

With this shift in diplomatic relations, the newly appointed leader distanced himself from the foreign policy pursued by his predecessor, the Peronist Alberto Fernández.

"Chancellor Diana Mondino has presidential instructions to support the opposition in Venezuela, vote against Nicaragua in the Organization of American States (OAS), and condemn Cuba in multilateral human rights organizations," the Argentine press reported at the time.

However, last June, Cuban activist Rosa María Payá, coordinator of the international campaign Cuba Decide, met with Mondino to discuss freedom and democracy in the region.

During the meeting, Payá praised the "freedom agenda" being promoted by Argentina, highlighting its significance not only for that country but for the entire American continent.

"The agenda of freedom that Argentina is promoting deeply inspires us. We believe this agenda has the intention of being not only a freedom agenda for Argentina but a continental one, for all the peoples of the Americas," he stated.
