With a spectacular grand slam by shortstop Anthony Volpe in the third inning, the New York Yankees defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers (11-4) on Tuesday to avoid a sweep and force a fifth game in the 2024 World Series of Major League Baseball.

In front of their fans at Yankee Stadium, the home team had to overcome an early deficit after Freddie Freeman's home run—his sixth consecutive game in the World Series—in the very first inning with Mookie Betts on base.

However, Volpe's hit off Daniel Hudson's first pitch changed the course of the game. "I don't know how I got it, but I took off running and then was left in awe," he told the press after the game.

Austin Wells also contributed with a home run in the sixth inning to strengthen the Yankees' lead, who then gained confidence and increased their run tally for the comfort of their team.

Additionally, the bullpen's effort left the Dodgers scoreless in the final five innings. Relievers Tim Hill, Clay Holmes, Mark Leiter Jr., Luke Weaver, and Tim Mayza teamed up to prevent the Yankees from achieving their first sweep in a World Series since 1976.

The fifth game, the last of the season at Yankee Stadium, will take place this Wednesday, with Gerrit Cole on the mound for New York, while Jack Flaherty will pitch for Los Angeles, repeating the pitcher matchup from the first game.
