After ten days on a hunger strike due to the Cuban prison authorities' refusal to grant him an interview, the physical deterioration of Professor Pedro Albert Sánchez is beginning to worry Cuban activists and family members who have raised various scenarios in the event that this situation escalates to a more tragic level.
"In prison, Pedro's condition has worsened; we do not want a corpse of Pedro, we want Pedro as he was when they kidnapped him," said his wife Ana Elvis Amaya Leyva during a live broadcast on Facebook.
The woman explained that she had gone to the prison of 1580, located in San Miguel del Padrón, where she was told that "Pedro has decided not to eat because he wants to speak, he wants to engage in dialogue with the regime, and they have turned their backs on him."
Amaya Leyva stated that the family has decided that if the regime does not return Pedro to them as he was arrested, then they will keep his body. "They will keep the body because his ideals are with us," she pointed out.
"The family is hurting, but Pedro made that decision. And be careful about giving him an IV, because the officer attending to him tells me that if he gets worse, they will take him to the doctor and administer an IV. I told them to be cautious about giving anything to Pedro, because I won’t be able to say it was a natural death, even though they are slowly killing him. If Pedro dies in prison, the blame will be on you," the wife had warned earlier to Martí Noticias.
Academic Alina Bárbara López Hernández has also joined in voicing concerns regarding the serious health condition of Professor Albert Sánchez.
In January 2023, the Cuban professor was sentenced to five years of restricted freedom by the Municipal People's Tribunal of Diez de Octubre. The ruling is a result of his participation in the protests of July 11, 2021.
Albert Sánchez was accused of alleged public disorder and contempt charges, leading to “five years of imprisonment, replaced by a restriction of liberty for the same period.”
However, he was detained by State Security in November, during the visit to Cuba by the European Union's Human Rights Rapporteur, Eamon Gilmore. On that occasion, the political prisoner and cancer patient was also isolated, at which point he decided to declare a hunger strike.
During the Father's Day celebrations in Cuba, his son, Pedro Antonio Albert, denounced that the island's regime is allowing his father to die by denying him access to medical care and medications.
Pedro Antonio decided to "file a formal complaint" so that the world knows that the political prisoner held in prison 1580, in San Miguel del Padrón, is a victim of the State Security's decision to assassinate him by "denying him all forms of medical attention and the medications he needs due to his delicate health condition resulting from the torture and mistreatment he has suffered there."
Amnesty International declared the professor a prisoner of conscience and urged President Miguel Díaz-Canel to release him "immediately and unconditionally."
