A pothole on the road is believed to have triggered an accident involving a motorcycle and a vintage car, with no reports of fatalities or injuries resulting from the incident.
The events took place this Tuesday at the intersection of Porvenir and Font streets, in the Havana neighborhood of La Víbora, located in the municipality of 10 de Octubre.
A report published in the Facebook group 'Accidentes Buses & Camiones' initially indicated that the accident occurred on the Porvenir roadway, near A Street. However, a supposed witness of the incident stated that it took place at the intersection of Porvenir and Font.
In response to users' speculations about the causes of the accident, the supposed witness clarified that it did not occur at any traffic light. Several internet users speculated that the traffic lights may not have been functioning due to the blackouts that have become a part of daily life in the capital.
“It was right in the middle of the road, and apparently the car had some issue because it veered onto the road for no apparent reason,” the witness explained.
Another user clarified that a third vehicle, a Lada, had been involved in the accident. Apparently, this vehicle fell into a pothole, which caused issues with its suspension. To avoid colliding with the Lada, the almendrón swerved and struck the motorcycle.
"Porvenir and Font. [It happened] at a hole in front of Manzanillo. The Lada lost control of the ball, and Chevi, avoiding the hole, went off the path and collided with the motorcycle," noted the internet user.
"There's a dangerous pothole there," said another user in the comments, confirming the presence of a hazard on the road that poses a risk to traffic.
The poor condition of the roads in Cuba is a major factor contributing to many traffic accidents. Potholes add to other issues that affect road safety, such as non-functioning traffic lights, insufficient street lighting, a lack of traffic signs, and more.
In mid-September, a Hyundai car, which the Cuban regime uses for tourist rentals, became stuck in a huge pothole in the city of Ciego de Ávila, with no reported injuries to the vehicle's occupants.
At the end of April, a Toyota jeep overturned after hitting a pothole on the National Highway. The accident took place before the Agua de Pasajeros checkpoint in the province of Cienfuegos, and only material damages were reported for the jeep, which suffered a steering failure.
Days earlier, a large pothole located on the important and busy 25th Avenue in the Marianao municipality of Havana caused a dramatic accident in which a Lada ended up overturned.
