Between nostalgia and the strength she finds in her daughters, a Cuban in the U.S. reflects on life away from her homeland

"Although the journey can be difficult at times, it is always worth it when you find those little reasons that fill your heart, because at the end of the day, it is those moments that truly matter."

Daiana Díaz, a Cuban who emigrated to the United States, shared a heartfelt message on TikTok that resonated with many. In her video, where she is seen working, she expresses the burden of loneliness and the emptiness she feels being away from her country and her parents.

"Have you ever felt surrounded by people yet still found the path to be lonely? That feeling of being far from home… and in reality, you work, socialize, and have family, but it’s something—clearly, it must be nostalgia that fills your soul," he confessed, reflecting the experience of many immigrants.

Despite that pain, Daiana finds strength in her family in the United States. Seeing her daughters at the end of the day and enjoying "a good coffee" reminds her that even though the path is tough, she has reasons to keep going. "They are my home, my motivation, my reason to continue and give my best," she added, inviting her followers to share what gives them strength to carry on when loneliness creeps in.

The post, which has already garnered 727 likes and numerous comments, sparked a wave of responses from other emigrants who resonate with that feeling of nostalgia. One user commented, "What gives me strength is knowing that we would be worse off in Cuba with no hope for anything; every day I think about the people who have no one to send them anything." Another person shared, "That emptiness has been with me for 20 years. It gives me strength to see my daughters becoming professionals with a future, knowing that I can help my loved ones over there."

Some followers expressed that the weight of loneliness becomes more bearable when thinking about the well-being of their families in Cuba: "Knowing that I can help my family at some point, knowing that despite the bad things in Cuba they are doing well, that gives me strength, seeing my mom even if it's just behind a screen," wrote one user. Others confessed that they find comfort in faith, like one person who commented: "I've been here for 9 years and I always feel alone. Only by speaking with God does that feeling ease for me."

For many, the sacrifice of being far away is justified by the future of their children, like someone who said, "What keeps me going are my children." The distance is tough, especially on special occasions: "I think it hits harder on this date. What I do is be grateful, because even though we are far apart, they are healthy, and that fills me with strength," shared another person.

Daiana's post has managed to create a space where many can talk about loneliness, nostalgia, and the sacrifices involved in living outside of Cuba. For these emigrants, love for their families and hope for a better future have become the driving forces that motivate them to move forward, despite the distance.
