Cubans are finishing off this weekend with a day of prolonged blackouts due to a significant generation deficit, which will result in a shortfall of 1,421 MW during peak demand hours.

The forecast could even prove to be an underestimate, just as it occurred on Saturday, when the prediction indicated a shortfall of 1,500 MW, and the impact ultimately peaked at 1,615 MW at 6:20 PM. Additionally, at that time, there were 100 MW affected due to outages in the electrical networks caused by Hurricane Rafael (99 MW in Artemisa and 1 MW in Mayabeque).

The service was affected for 24 hours and remained that way throughout the early morning today.

According to the report from the Unión Eléctrica (UNE), this Sunday at 7:00 am, there were 771 MW affected by a generation deficit, in addition to another 94 MW in Artemisa due to network malfunctions. By noon, the deficit is expected to rise to 1100 MW.

Five units from the Mariel, Nuevitas, Felton, and Renté thermoelectric plants are out of service due to malfunction. Additionally, four blocks from the Santa Cruz, Cienfuegos, and Renté plants are undergoing maintenance.

In addition, 49 distributed generation plants are out of service due to a lack of fuel, including the terminals in Santiago de Cuba and Regla, as well as the CDE Moa, totaling 558 MW affected.

The limitations in thermal generation are 346 MW.
