Although Damián Valdez-Galloso did not attend the court appearance on November 21, his lawyer stated before the judge that he pleaded not guilty, which has caused a great deal of outrage among Cubans who follow the reggaeton artist.
While the fact that he denies his guilt is an aspect that the prosecution can use against him during the trial, many wonder how he could declare himself innocent given the evidence and proof against him.
In several posts on social media, the outrage of users is evident: “With the videos out there, I don’t understand this guy's attitude. What a troubling individual this accomplice is. But whether he likes it or not, he’s going to have to yield, and justice for José will prevail”; “How can he claim to be innocent? What nerve he has”; “No one admits guilt in their first or second court appearance; this is a serious case, and he will fight it, even though we all know it was him. This case is going to drag on”; “But didn’t the video show that he was the one who shot? I don’t get it.”
“It’s better that he continues to plead not guilty; if it goes to trial, he could face the maximum sentence. On the other hand, if he reaches a plea deal with the prosecution by pleading guilty, he won't receive as many years; they'll give him the minimum. So, let’s be glad he’s declaring not guilty,” others commented. “I think it’s best for him to plead not guilty so that he faces the full force of the law. Otherwise, if he pleads guilty, he may cooperate and avoid the death penalty or have his sentence reduced, which is not what we want. What we want is justice,” they added.
According to information provided by journalist Daniel Benítez from outside the Miami-Dade court, a new court appearance has been scheduled for December 19. "This is a legal process that is just beginning; the plea of not guilty paves the way for the trial and allows all evidence to be revealed."
Damián Valdez-Galloso must appear in court to face charges of second-degree murder, tampering with evidence, and possession of a firearm.
