In their attempt to reach the United States and seek asylum, other Cubans have sustained injuries while trying to climb the fence that separates the two countries from Mexico.

In 2021, Mexican immigration authorities found a deceased man of Cuban nationality at the foot of the border wall with the United States in the Mexican state of Baja California.

The flow of Cuban migrants to the United States by land has not ceased over the past three years, marking the largest exodus in history from Cuba to the North American country.

In recent weeks, Cubans have been detained among groups of immigrants who have crossed the border illegally in areas of Texas.

The latest report from the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) revealed that last October, the first month of fiscal year 2025 (FY 2025), a total of 8,261 Cubans entered the northern country through irregular pathways.

During the fiscal year 2024, which ended on September 30, a total of 217,615 Cubans were inspected by CBP and entered U.S. territory. This was the second highest figure since 2021, only surpassed by the record of 224,607 in fiscal year 2022.

Meanwhile, the administration of President Joe Biden has continued to carry out deportation flights of irregular Cuban immigrants to Havana since resuming them in April 2023.

In total, 936 Cubans have been deported to the island by air since then, according to figures from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) collected by the news outlet CaféFuerte. At the end of November, during the twentieth deportation flight, 24 individuals were returned, including one woman.

After being elected for his second term as president, Donald Trump confirmed that among his priorities is the implementation of an immigration plan aimed at significantly restricting the entry of immigrants into the U.S.

Trump announced his intention to declare a national emergency and deploy the military to implement his plan for mass deportations.

It also plans to eliminate two mechanisms that have been key for the arrival of Cubans to the U.S.: the humanitarian parole program and the CBP One appointment system.
