The National Police of Ecuador announced this Wednesday the seizure at the José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport in Guayaquil of nearly one kilogram of cocaine hidden in natural products destined for Cuba.

The drugs were concealed in luggage bound for Havana, disguised as capsules labeled as herbal supplements. This allowed them to evade routine checks until they were detected by a specialized dog, according to a report from the local outlet Expreso.

During a routine inspection in the international cargo area, police officers raised concerns about a palletizer that aroused suspicion.

Following an intervention by a narcotics detection dog, a suitcase was examined and found to contain 1,742 capsules in plastic and glass containers, labeled as natural products. Inside the capsules was powdered cocaine.

The seized cargo weighed 964 grams, divided into 9,640 doses, and was destined for the island, where authorities estimate that the value of the drug on the local market could reach $19,280.

The National Police also reported the arrest of the owner of the suitcase, who will be prosecuted for drug trafficking. The nationality and identity of the individual have not been disclosed.

Last week, another smuggling attempt was reported at the same Ecuadorian airport, when police discovered 1,128 grams of cocaine hidden inside a box that supposedly contained a television and artisanal toquilla straw products, but the intended destination of the shipment was Europe.

In Cuba, authorities have acknowledged the rise in drug consumption among increasingly younger individuals.
