Cuban girl Amanda is starting to recover well from her recent surgery in Spain

The Cuban girl Amanda Lemus Ortiz continues to recover successfully from the surgery she underwent on Monday at a hospital in Spain, where a stent was placed in her bile duct.

According to activist Yamilka Lafita (Lara Crofs), the child has fully recovered from anesthesia; she spent the night from Tuesday to Wednesday quite well and was able to rest.

"Her recovery is going well, and that gives us more peace of mind. Thank you for staying updated and attentive," Lara said on her Facebook wall, alongside a photo of the girl in her bed with a plate of food.

Amanda's most recent surgery was very long and complex.

Mila Ortiz's mother explained that the procedure "was quite difficult because [the duct] was almost closed," but the goal was achieved.

"The doctors told me that everything went well. They took a long time because it was complex, but the stent is already in place. It was quite a major surgery, but that's it. Now I just have to wait for recovery," he said.

In a later post, Lara Crofs expressed her admiration for Amanda's strength, acknowledging the tough journey she has endured to get here.

"How strong you are, beautiful girl with infinite eyes! We're still sending you all the good things in this world. A big kiss from this community," he wrote.

Amanda, who underwent a liver transplant in Spain last March, had to be hospitalized again on November 27.

She had been experiencing itching for days, which even caused her problems while sleeping. When she was taken to the hospital, they performed an urgent ultrasound and detected that her bile duct was dilating once again.

On November 28, they were supposed to place a stent in the dilated duct to ensure it could function properly, but it was impossible to enter because the duct was very narrow. They placed a drain to expel the bile from his body, and a week later, they attempted to re-enter the duct, but it was unsuccessful.

"The doctors decided to proceed with surgery to do everything possible to restore that pathway and place the stent, as without it, there is a risk of relapse that could affect the healthy liver once again," Lara specified last week.

The activist urged her followers to pray for the young girl to support her during this new difficult challenge she must face.

The surgery was scheduled for early Monday morning.

At the beginning of November, seven months after Amanda's transplant in Madrid, following the abandonment by the Cuban healthcare system, Lara shared a photo that showcased the remarkable progress of the little girl.

"Do you all recognize that little face? To me, it represents willpower, the idea that 'where there’s a will, there’s a way', and the unity of a civil society that rose up for a greater and more noble cause," he said on his Facebook profile.

The struggle to save Amanda's life began in January when her mother, in a message that went viral, publicly apologized to her daughter for bringing her into a country that could not address her medical needs.

Amanda was suffering from a severe liver disease and urgently needed a liver transplant, but the restrictions in Cuba made it impossible to perform the surgery, so a humanitarian visa was requested for her.

After several weeks of campaigning supported by activists, independent media, and generous Cubans, the necessary funds were raised for Amanda and her parents to travel to Spain, where a hospital had agreed to take her case.
