A child residing in Santiago de Cuba passed away this Saturday after being hospitalized for several days, presumably due to consuming contaminated salami, although this has not yet been confirmed.
According to independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada's report on Facebook, the child was named Hanoi Aguilera Montero and was only one year old. He had been rushed to the Children's Hospital North (Ondi) along with his sister after ingesting contaminated salami.
The girl is still undergoing therapy and is in very delicate health.
Mayeta shared a photo from the wake at the funeral home in El Caney, the town where the family resides.
According to a relative, "the doctors told us that he died from consuming salami, but once the results of the autopsy are in, we will be able to determine the real cause of death."
In the post, several people claim that the salami itself was not the issue and that it was contaminated with insecticide; others suggest that the damaged food could be lettuce.
Some even claim that the tests conducted to determine whether the sausage was contaminated returned negative results, and that the reason for the incident was that the children's father was carrying the salami in a wheelbarrow that had contained pesticides.
The child's relative was emphatic when speaking with journalist Mayeta, stating that what the children consumed was salami, not lettuce.
So far, no official media outlet has commented on this horrific event that has shocked the community.
