A Cuban family man was murdered in the early hours of December 31 in an alleged settling of scores in San José de los Ramos, Colón, Matanzas.

It concerns Yadiel Carballo Castañeda, 28 years old, who was allegedly assaulted in his home in San José delos Ramos in the early morning, in front of his wife and their three-year-old daughter, as reported by Víctor Hernández.

The deceased reportedly fought back and managed to injure one of his three attackers, but ultimately he was killed. One of the assailants, Niubel Chacón, has been treated in a hospital, where he was photographed while crying. Of the other two, one has been identified.

For an internet user who identifies herself as Marisol Lima, "if the police in Cuba do not take strong actions against criminals, the country will end up in a bloodbath. How long will we allow families to live in such anguish?" she wonders.

Leanet Osorio, a neighbor of the victim, expressed her sorrow over the crime on the deceased's Facebook wall. "Rest in peace, Yadiel. I will always remember you and how you called me every time I went to the corner. I also won't forget how we fell on the 24th. May God hold you in glory," she wrote.

On the wall of the deceased, a death notice dedicated to Yadiel Caraballo was published this December 31, seemingly written by his widow. "What they did is unforgivable, but I, my love, will do everything I can to ensure they pay for what they did to you. A loss like this cannot be replaced. They did not care about my girl nor the suffering of two mothers. That is why I ask for justice to be served."

"One of the good ones from San José," added Yoervis Santana, while a relative of the deceased, Libia Fuentes, expressed sorrow over the tragic event. "Oh my God, how much pain for my family. That loss. My cousin, you didn’t deserve this. Rest in peace," she wrote.

This is not the only crime that has been reported at the end of the year. Also in Santiago de Cuba, in the El Salao neighborhood of the Abel Santamaría district, a 31-year-old man, father to a six-year-old boy, was reportedly killed over a phone. Elio Delis Hardy was stabbed in a building in Micro II.

At the end of last year, the Cuban regime acknowledged the increase in violence on the Island, although it claimed there are indications that it is decreasing. However, it did not provide any data to demonstrate that this narrative aligns with reality.

In 2024, Cuba was shaken by crimes such as the one involving Ceballos, in which two mothers lost their lives alongside their children during a robbery that ended in a massacre. The killers were known to the family. A relative of one of the victims told CiberCuba that the four-year-old boy who died in that attack was tortured.

The neighborhood of Cayo Hueso in Central Havana was also shaken by a multiple murder involving a mother, her son, and a neighbor. In this instance, theft was the motive for the crime.

In the first six months of 2024, independent media reported 432 crimes in Cuba, averaging 2.37 crimes per day, which is significantly higher than the figures reported for the same period in 2023.

Among the crimes reported are 91 homicides, 260 thefts, 39 assaults, 29 acts of aggression, and 13 cases classified as other crimes. These figures come from the Cuban Citizen Audit Observatory (OCAC) and were published in August.
