The iconic ice cream parlor Coppelia, known as the “Cathedral of Ice Cream,” could reopen its doors to the public before the end of January.
An employee of the entity informed CubaNet that a scoop of ice cream will cost 25 Cuban pesos, a "justified" increase due to the high cost of raw materials.
According to the news portal, this information was communicated to the employees during a recent meeting with the president of the Internal Trade Business Group of Havana.
At this meeting, it was reported that the authorities of the Party and the Government of the capital set a one-week deadline to paint, change furniture, and make necessary adjustments to reopen the facility. Although no exact date was specified, the reopening is expected to take place before the end of the month.
In addition to the price increase, there is a plan to restore the availability of snacks such as cookies and chocolates, following negotiations with related companies. The renewal of staff uniforms and aesthetic improvements in the venue are also anticipated.
On the other hand, the president of the State-owned Enterprises Group for Domestic Trade denied rumors about a possible handover of Coppelia to a small or medium-sized enterprise, stating that, while agreements could be established with these entities, the ice cream parlor will continue to be managed by the State, emphasized CubaNet.
The ice cream shop, closed since November 2024, has only been selling packages of sweet cookies and four-liter tubs of ice cream for 1,720 pesos, while the facilities remain out of service.
The lack of ice cream, due to the absence of raw materials such as milk and sugar, led to the closure of the iconic facility located at the central corner of 23 and L in Vedado, Havana, reported 14 y Medio.
In December, passersby in front of what was once the iconic ice cream establishment in Cuba sadly witnessed the decline of this Havana landmark.
