Ángel Ramis reveals how he overcame his toughest battle: "I was going crazy."

The renowned Cuban comedian Ángel Ramis, famous for his iconic characters and monologues such as “El Feo” and the unforgettable Cabo Pantera from “Jura Decir la Verdad,” opened his heart on the podcast “La Rigoterapia,” hosted by Rigoberto Ferrer.

In a heartfelt interview, Ramis talked about his professional journey, the hardest moments of his life, and how he managed to overcome his personal demons, especially his battle with alcoholism.

"I was in such bad shape that they wouldn't let me go on stage," he recounted sincerely. That experience, which he describes as "the worst day of his life," deeply marked him, leading him to seek help to regain control of his life.

The comedian shared how alcohol affected his perception of reality, leading him to experience distorted dreams and feelings of guilt for situations that had never occurred.

"I dreamed of things that never happened and apologized to people for things I never did," he confessed. It was at Alcoholics Anonymous where he began his recovery process, supported by friends and colleagues who offered him their unconditional support.

Ramis also shared anecdotes about his humble beginnings in Santo Domingo, Las Tunas, where he grew up surrounded by music, improvisation, and a rural environment that would shape his humorous style.

Despite graduating as a construction teacher, he soon discovered his true passion in humor: "I went to amateur festivals, and that's where it all began," he recalled.

His monologue "El Feo", which blended irony and social reality, was his first major success and opened doors for groups like Los Avispas and, later, the Centro Promotor del Humor in Havana.

One of the highlights of his career was his participation in the show "Jura Decir la Verdad," where he played the hilarious Cabo Pantera, a character that became an icon of Cuban television.

According to Ramis, his improvisational style and ability to connect with the audience were key to his success: “I always try to update my shows with what is happening in the moment. Humor is a way of narrating life,” he commented.

In addition to discussing his career, the comedian reflected on the role of humor in Cuban society and emphasized the importance of unity among comedians.

"We are like a family. The Centro Promotor del Humor achieved something unique: bringing together comedians from all over Cuba in a guild that, despite differences, always supports one another," he stated.

He nostalgically recalled the days when he shared space with great figures of Cuban humor such as Ulises Toirac, Carlitos Gonzalvo, and Osvaldo Doimeadiós, among others.

The comedian also shared how he managed to find a balance between his personal and professional life, as he has three children whom he considers his greatest pride. Ramis asserts that family stability has been key to his recovery and success: “I have a beautiful family and a group of friends who have always supported me. They are my motivation.”
