The elected president Donald Trump invited the Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo González, regarded by the United States and much of the international community as the legitimate elected president of Venezuela, to attend the inauguration ceremony scheduled for this Monday in Washington.

Sources close to the opposition team confirmed that González plans to arrive in the country this weekend and will be present at Trump's inauguration, who defended the integrity of the opposition figure María Corina Machado when she was kidnapped on January 9th by Chavista forces.

During his visit to the U.S., González also plans to meet with officials from the new administration, although a potential meeting with President Trump will depend on his availability, cited El Nuevo Herald.

Additionally, he will travel to South Florida next week to meet with members of the Venezuelan community living there.

Currently, González is in Guatemala as part of an international tour aimed at garnering support for the democratic cause of Venezuela.

Before arriving in the United States, the opponent will make a stop in Costa Rica.

González had planned to be sworn in on January 10 as the legitimate president of Venezuela, but he was forced to abandon that plan due to the threat from Nicolás Maduro's regime, which warned that it would use the country's air defense system against the plane he intended to travel on.

Maduro was sworn in last Friday despite opposition demands and more than 180 protests against his inauguration, in a ceremony that included a limited number of international representatives, among them the presidents of Cuba and Nicaragua, Miguel Díaz-Canel and Daniel Ortega, respectively.

Several leaders from the region will attend Trump's inauguration, including the president of Mexico Claudia Sheinbaum.
