The construction of the wall at the border in the El Paso sector of Texas has officially begun, confirmed independent reporter specializing in border issues, Anthony Aguero.
The reactivation of this controversial project comes after months of uncertainty and renewed promises from President Donald Trump, who, just a week after taking office, has already given the green light for construction work to begin.
Since his return to the presidency in January 2025, Trump has reiterated his commitment to building the wall, one of the most prominent promises of his first term.
In a video posted on X by Aguero, the sounds of construction machinery can be heard on the American side of the border.
At a press conference held at his luxurious residence in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, Trump defended a few weeks ago the need to continue with the project despite the increase in costs compared to levels from 2017 to 2021.
"It's a very expensive process, a very expensive wall," declared the president, referring to the cost of the infrastructure, which now includes materials such as steel and reinforced concrete.
Trump highlighted on that occasion the technological improvements in the construction industry that allow for the use of stronger concrete and reinforcement bars to ensure greater durability of the wall.
He also mentioned that the costs to complete the border with Mexico have skyrocketed, with additional expenses compared to the sections already built.
"The construction industry has changed a lot since we started this project," he explained, noting that the use of more robust materials increases expenses.
Moreover, Trump strongly criticized Joe Biden's administration for allegedly selling materials intended for the border wall.
According to reports cited by Trump, the Biden administration allowed parts of the project to be halted and vital materials to be redirected, something the president described as a deliberate attempt to undermine "his legacy".
"Biden has done everything possible to undo what we built," Trump asserted, referring to the recently concluded immigration policy of the Democratic government.
The restart of the wall construction is not without challenges, as additional costs, political tensions, and the ethical implications of Trump's policies continue to be points of contention.
"I will finish the wall, which I have already largely built," he emphasized at the aforementioned press conference.
