On the 172nd anniversary of the birth of José Martí, the Cuban opposition figure José Daniel Ferrer took to his social media to pay tribute to the Apostle of independence, emphasizing his commitment to freedom of expression and condemning any form of tyranny.
Through a message on Twitter, Ferrer quoted verses and reflections from Martí that highlight the importance of plurality of opinions and the universal rights of citizens.
Ferrer emphasized phrases from Martí such as: “A people is made up of the rights and opinions of all its children, not just those of a single class of its children,” to highlight the importance of diversity of thought in a truly free society.
Additionally, he recalled that Martí described Marxist socialism as "future slavery", arguing that Martian values are incompatible with communism.
The opposition leader also shared verses from the Apostle that denounce oppression, such as: “The slavery of men is the great sorrow of the world,” reaffirming his stance against the Cuban totalitarian regime and in defense of the fundamental rights of citizens.
In his message, Ferrer not only paid tribute to Martí's legacy, but also seized the opportunity to call on Cubans to take action, encouraging them to fight for a free and just Cuba. With a verse of his own, he noted: "If you feel like a good Cuban / you will know how to honor Martí / you will know that we must fight / against every cruel tyrant."
On January 28, Cuba celebrates Martí's birthday, a day that has become one of the cornerstones of the Cuban regime's propaganda, used to project the image of legitimacy that the so-called Cuban "revolution" lacks.
Aware of this, Ferrer used the date to contrast Marti's teachings with the current reality of the country, reaffirming the need to defend democratic values and human rights.
