A father and his son were injured in a large fire that broke out this Tuesday in the Las Cañas neighborhood of the Artemisa municipality.

Both suffered minor burns during the incident that destroyed the family's home, reported the local outlet Artemisa Diario.

The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon when flames began to spiral out of control in the home of Juan Miguel Sáez, a resident of the area, while he was performing mechanical work in his backyard, the newspaper reported.

According to testimonies from neighbors, the fire was caused by a spark generated by a homemade heater coming into contact with fuel.

Despite Juan Miguel's efforts to extinguish the fire, the smoke and heat caused him minor burns on his face, which also affected his son when he tried to help his father.

The incident did not result in any fatalities.

The fire severely affected two homes located on 14th Street between 3rd and 5th, in the Las Cañas area.

The Artemisa Fire Department was quickly mobilized after receiving the alert. According to Lieutenant Colonel Yaser Sánchez Seguí, head of the provincial Fire Department, the first units arrived on the scene when the Sáez family's house was already fully burned, and the flames were threatening to spread to the neighboring home.

“The main actions were aimed at preventing the fire from spreading further, conducting attacks from within. Finally, we managed to extinguish the blaze,” detailed Sánchez Seguí.

The Director of Housing in Artemisa, Deysi Milián Castillo, stated that the necessary assessments will be conducted as soon as access to the affected homes is allowed, and "the materials needed for the reconstruction of the house will be provided. Additionally, support from a brigade will be arranged, although it seems that in this case, the family will receive help from friends and close relatives," Milián Castillo explained.

According to the authorities, the municipal Social Assistance will urgently manage the delivery of two mattresses for those affected, who are currently receiving immediate care and support.
