A Cuban resident of Lehigh Acres, in Lee County, was arrested in Hialeah after being charged with involuntary manslaughter for allegedly accidentally shooting his girlfriend.
Although the Cuban, 28 years old and identified as Yendry Antolín Espinosa, appeared in court this Thursday, the tragic event dates back to December 14, 2024, and occurred in a residence located at 46th Street and Eighth Lane in East Hialeah.
On that day, the now-accused, who was living in a rented efficiency, was with a group of friends when, allegedly accidentally, he fired his firearm, according to the police report cited by America Tevé.
When the Hialeah police officers responded to the emergency call, they found a woman with a gunshot wound to the neck.
A witness reported that Espinosa had accidentally shot the woman.
At that moment, the now-accused approached the investigators voluntarily and admitted to having fired the weapon.
The victim was immediately taken by the Hialeah fire rescue team to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where they later passed away.
Witnesses told authorities that they were in the common area of the house when Espinosa entered his room, emerged with a gun in hand, and as he approached the front door, a shot was heard.
Immediately afterwards, they saw the victim bleeding before collapsing to the ground. They all agreed that it seemed like an accident.
During his appearance in criminal court on Thursday, the prosecution reported that the accused has been cooperating with the investigation.
He was granted a bail of $15,000 and is facing a charge of involuntary manslaughter with a firearm.
"The neighborhood is very quiet; it might have been an accident, as they say," commented a neighbor in statements to the aforementioned media outlet.
As of the closing of this report, no further details about the strange incident have emerged.
For their part, security experts have emphasized the importance of taking precautions when handling firearms to prevent similar tragedies.
“There are two options when buying a firearm: with a safety lock or without one. If it will always be kept at home, it is advisable to keep it with the safety on. It is also recommended to purchase a safe and store the magazine separately, in addition to using a security lock,” explained Stephanie Soto, manager of Miami Guns & Range.
