The Vatican has issued a new medical report regarding the health of Pope Francis, confirming that his treatment has been modified following the detection of a "polymicrobial respiratory tract infection."
Despite the concern raised, the Holy See has emphasized that this does not imply a "worsening" of his condition, but rather a better understanding of his medical situation.
A change in treatment
Since his admission to the Gemelli Polyclinic last Friday, the Pope has undergone various tests and treatments.
Initially, the symptoms were treated with cortisones, but due to the lack of a positive response, it was decided to adjust the pharmacological therapy.
"The results of the analyses conducted in recent days have revealed a polymicrobial infection of the respiratory tract, which has led to a new change in therapy. The analyses performed to date indicate a complex clinical picture that will require appropriate hospitalization," detailed the official Vatican statement.
Despite this medical assessment, a date for the Pope's discharge has not been estimated.
The Holy See has reiterated that the Pope is under "absolute rest" and is continuing with the therapy adapted to his current situation.
The Vatican spokesman, Matteo Bruni, assured that Francisco is in "good spirits" and has had restful nights.
"The Pope has rested well, had a peaceful night, enjoyed breakfast, and has spent time, as usual, reading some newspapers. The therapy continues," Bruni noted.
Despite his hospitalization, the Pontiff has not set aside his pastoral and humanitarian concerns.
During the weekend, he made calls to the only Catholic parish in Gaza, the Church of the Holy Family, to learn firsthand about the situation of the clergy residing there.
"He called us on Friday and Saturday; his voice was a bit tired, but he was in good spirits and wanted to know how we were doing," explained a parish volunteer in a television interview.
According to Argentine priest Gabriel Romanelli, parish priest of the church in Gaza, communication with the Pope has been constant since the beginning of the conflict in the region.
"Despite being hospitalized and experiencing a power outage, she called us twice. Last night she sent us a message to thank us for our support," Romanelli revealed.
Cancellation of hearings and mandatory rest
Given the Pope's medical condition, the Prefecture of the Papal Household has decided to cancel all scheduled audiences at least until next Saturday.
For the first time in his papacy, the Pontiff was also unable to attend the Sunday Angelus.
Instead, he followed the televised mass from the hospital, led by Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça as part of the Jubilee of Artists.
Despite his health condition, the Pope has tried to remain active as much as possible. "His mood is good. It is true that he is more tired, but his voice is clear and he listens to us well," assured parish priest Romanelli.
Medical history of the Pontiff
Francisco has faced several health issues in recent years.
In June 2023, he underwent surgery to remove intestinal scar tissue and repair a hernia in the abdominal wall.
Previously, in March of the same year, he spent three days in the same hospital receiving intravenous antibiotics for another respiratory infection.
Since his youth, when part of his lung was removed, the Pope has experienced recurring respiratory issues.
Last year, during Holy Week, he was affected by prolonged bronchitis.
