The writer, essayist, and professor Francisco López Sacha passed away this Sunday in Havana, leaving a remarkable mark on literature and the cultural thought of "revolutionary" Cuba, according to the official site Cubadebate.

A prominent figure in the landscape of "committed" narrative, his advocates highlighted his "sharp critical eye and mastery," noting his influence on generations of writers.

Born in Manzanillo in 1950, López Sacha dedicated himself to narrative, essay writing, and criticism. Among his published works are: Descubrimiento del azul (1987), El cumpleaños del fuego (1986), and La división de las aguas (1987).

He holds a degree in Literature and specializes in Theatre Studies. He was a professor of Dramatic Thought at the Higher Institute of Art in Havana (ISA) and taught screenwriting at the International School of Film and Television (EICTV) in San Antonio de los Baños.

He was also president of the Association of Writers of the official Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC), deputy director of the Onelio Jorge Cardoso Literary Training Workshop, and director of the official magazine Letras Cubanas.

The writer was among the signers of the official letter which in October 2022 denied that the Cuban regime repressed political dissidents and peaceful protesters in the streets, thereby endorsing the violation of rights and freedoms prevailing on the island.

In February 2024, he granted an interview to the official newspaper Granma in which he stated that he writes "so that a better man is born" and expressed having "the same hope as the great leaders who founded this country, the same hope as Céspedes or Martí, Agramonte or Fidel."

At the time of writing this note, the causes of death of the 75-year-old writer are unknown, as well as the funeral arrangements being prepared for him.
