Amid the energy crisis affecting Cuba, leader Miguel Díaz-Canel stated this Wednesday that the "Carlos Manuel de Céspedes" Thermoelectric Plant in Cienfuegos, one of the country's main sources of energy, will be operational by summer.
The president visited the province of Cienfuegos this Wednesday as part of his tour across the country, and stated that work is being done on the thermoelectric plant, which is currently out of service due to serious breakdowns experienced in October 2024.
Alongside a government commission, Díaz-Canel assured that the government is working to ensure that both affected units of the power plant - unit 3 and unit 4 - are operational by the summer of this year.
According to the general director of the plant, José Osvaldo González Rodríguez, complex work is currently being carried out on the turbine of unit 3, which is expected to be completed by mid-February, with synchronization planned with the National Electric System (SEN) for the first half of April.
Unit 3 will provide a nominal power of 158 MW.
Regarding unit 4, which suffered significant damage to its boiler and other key components, González Rodríguez noted that maintenance is intensive, involving a boiler intervention, along with work on the heat exchangers and the turbine.
The launch of this unit is scheduled for the first half of June, also with a capacity of 158 MW.
The collapse of the National Electric System on October 18 led to a widespread blackout across Cuba, which simultaneously took both units of the thermoelectric plant offline, something that hadn't happened in years.
The Cuban government claims that it has focused its efforts on the recovery of this key plant to alleviate the pressure on the country's electrical system, which has provinces experiencing daily outages of up to 23 hours.
