The president of Argentina, Javier Milei, and the tech mogul Elon Musk had a notable meeting at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) held in National Harbor, Maryland.
At the event, Milei presented Musk with a replica of the chainsaw he used as a symbol of his electoral campaign, which represents his policy of drastic cuts in public spending.
Musk, CEO of Tesla and owner of the social network X, received the gift with enthusiasm and joked while holding it up in front of the audience: “This is the chainsaw of bureaucracy.”
The businessman, who has repeatedly shown affinity with right-wing political leaders, was the surprise guest at the event, where he appeared wearing a black cap with the slogan "Make America Great Again" (MAGA), associated with President Donald Trump.
Milei's gesture towards Musk underscores the increasing closeness between them, as they have exchanged compliments and demonstrated ideological similarities on social media.
At the event, the Argentine president warmly greeted Musk with a "Hello, friend!" before presenting him with the unusual gift. The chainsaw will be displayed at the headquarters of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a commission chaired by the South African mogul, established to reduce public spending in the United States.
During the closing of the meeting, Milei is expected to deliver a speech in which he will reaffirm his commitment to economic reforms in Argentina.
Prior to his intervention at CPAC, Milei has key meetings scheduled with the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, and with the President of the World Bank, Ajay Banga. The president aims to renegotiate Argentina's debt with the IMF, which amounts to about 40 billion dollars.
