The Miami International Airport (MIA) set a new record in 2024 by registering an impressive traffic of 56 million passengers and three million tons of cargo, as announced by the Miami-Dade County Mayor's Office.
This milestone establishes MIA as one of the busiest airports in the world and reflects the rise of tourism and international travel following the COVID-19 pandemic.
The figures reveal a global growth of 6.8% in passenger traffic compared to the previous year.
The increase was primarily driven by a rise of 8.4% in international travel, with 25.2 million passengers arriving from different countries.
Domestic flights also saw a significant increase of 5.6%, reaching 30.8 million travelers.
This growth positions MIA as the U.S. airport with the greatest expansion in the mega airport category (those that receive more than 33 million passengers per year), with a 24% increase in seat capacity offered by airlines compared to 2019.
A multibillion-dollar modernization underway
During the announcement of the record figures, Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava highlighted the progress of the ambitious $9 billion airport modernization plan.
This project, designed to enhance the passenger experience and ensure operational efficiency, has successfully been renewed so far:
-33 transport units (including escalators, elevators, and moving walkways).
-48 completely remodeled bathrooms.
-32 boarding bridges, two of which are equipped with energy-efficient glass technology.
Currently, 95% of the 616 airport transport units are operational, compared to 85% last year.
It is expected that, by the end of this year, an additional 30 units will be modernized.
An international reference airport
"We are the second airport for international passengers in the United States and the tenth in terms of total passengers in the country. Globally, we rank 25th for total passengers," said Ralph Cutie, CEO of MIA.
However, this rapid growth has also had an impact on the infrastructure. According to Mayor Levine Cava, "this growth not only represents a significant economic investment but also a considerable strain on our infrastructure."
"A year ago, we announced how we would modernize and maintain the airport while it continues to grow, and we have done just that."
New investments and future improvements
As part of the initiatives to improve the facilities, the authorities in Miami-Dade have allocated $1.7 billion for areas that required urgent attention, such as elevators, escalators, moving walkways, and restrooms.
Among the most notable projects is the construction of a new garage with a capacity for 2,200 vehicles, as well as the hiring of 100 additional employees to strengthen the maintenance and passenger assistance team.
Miami-Dade Commissioner Kevin Marino Cabrera noted that there is still work ahead
"There is still much to be done, but we are ensuring that the future is excellent for our passengers."
Future Projects: An even more modern airport
Among the new developments expected for this year, the following stand out:
-The inauguration of a new hotel at the airport.
-The renovation of passenger lounges and check-in counters.
-The expansion of the Flamingo parking garage.
These improvements reflect the commitment of the airport and the authorities of Miami-Dade County to continue investing in the sustained growth of MIA, solidifying its position as one of the leading air connection hubs in the world.
